Bar Code Tutorial

A Bar Code is a graphical representation of a number. The lines that make up a bar code vary in width and are recognized by the scanner and decoded back into a number to be used by a computer or cash register.
Most bar codes display the number below the vertical bars which is called a Human Readable and may be used in case of a faulty scan.
Bar codes may consist only of numbers (numeric) or both numbers and letters (alpha-numeric). Sarah Promotions recommends numeric bar codes where possible as alpha-numeric numbers require larger bar codes to be able to represent all of the alpha-numeric characters.
There are many different bar codes with names such as Code 128, Interleaved 2 of 5, EAN13 etc. These are just names given to describe the bar code. You will notice that some bar codes are wider than others. For now you should note that there are two main groups....
Local Codes; These are used when you do not require an International code. For example, to tag goods in your own shop that will only be scanned by your own employees.
International Codes; If you require a code that is unique to your company, even when scanned by others. For example, you sell your goods to department stores. These codes must be registered with the relevant authority. A typical international code identifies your country, your company, and your product.
Important; Your scanner should be able to read BOTH International and Local codes automatically.
If you choose a local code you can still read International codes that are supplied to your store with brand name goods.

The Canadian Association of Liquor Jurisdictions (CALJ) provides information about bar codes and product identification standards for use in the distribution of beverage alcohol in Canada, on the CALJ site
